Today is July
16th, the activity that we will do is harvest dragon fruit. We depart from the
basecamp at 6:30 in the morning using 2 cars to go to the dragon fruit garden,
it only takes a few minutes to get there. Arriving there, we saw the owner
along with his pet dog, their plantation had 3 greenhouses which were quite
large with 2 greenhouses filled with honeydew melons and 1 greenhouse
containing dragon fruit gardens. Before we harvest we need to prepare some
equipment first such as a box for dragon fruit, buckets, gloves, boots,
scissors to harvest dragon fruit, shovels, etc. Then we transport it using the
car pick up and go to the dragon fruit garden.
There we are
taught the correct way to harvest dragon fruit, seen from the dragon fruit that
is ready to harvest has a bright red color and there is no green color on the
fruit skin. How to harvest dragon fruit is easy by using gloves, buckets, and
scissors, the right way to cut the dragon fruit is by sticking a pair of
scissors into a plant stem with dragon fruit and cutting the stalks inside the
stem and then gently dragging the dragon fruit. After the dragon fruit is
harvested, we are taught to get rid of dragon fruit flowers because for good
fruit growth by looking at the age of the flower that has begun to wilt and then
rotated and released from the fruit. After that, we were taught how to use a
good fertilizer for dragon fruit plant growth, the fertilizer used contained a
mixture of chicken manure, NPK, and compost, then mixed evenly then transferred
to a bucket to spread to plants, 1 bucket of fertilizer used for 1 row of
plants dragon fruit, and is given by spreading fertilizer between dragon fruit
plants.
After everything is finished, then we rest in
front of the garden, but there is still one more activity, namely grading, with
the aim of sorting out dragon fruit with the provisions of grades 1-10, 1 for
grade A, 2-4 for grade B, 5-9 for grade C, seen from the weight of dragon fruit
in grams, by placing 1 dragon fruit box on a special grading scale, then taking
one by one the dragon fruit from the box and later the scales will
automatically mention the dragon fruit grade taken then placed in different
boxes according to grade, while chatting and joking with the owner of the
garden, we also provided some snacks and ice-ice served with tofu, beans, and
bubble, yes it tastes good except that for Indonesians it might not be sweet
enough, Taiwanese tastes and Indonesia is different :), we have also shown
several videos about the history of their gardens that started from 0 to the
present. Before we go home we turn out to be given a lot of dragon fruit from
our harvest, and we are delivered home using a pickup truck, quite tired for
the size of the garden which is quite extensive but it turns out that it is
also fast for a number of people like us.
After arriving
at the basecamp it turned out that everyone looked tired and then rested. But
there is another activity at 2:30 p.m. which is harvesting flowers. After
resting, praying and eating, at 2:30 we go to the flower garden using a bicycle
and not far from the base camp, when we get there, it turns out we can't
harvest the flowers, we don't know why, maybe because there are still flowers
that aren't blooming enough harvested, quite disappointed but finally we were
just looking around and taking pictures, just a few minutes we were there and
immediately returned home to the basecamp.
