One of the student activities in
the 7th semester is practical field work activities (KKN). Sumbawa University
of Technology holds KKN as one of the graduation requirements for undergraduate
students. KKN is a form of practical field work activities carried out by
students as one of the points of the “Tridharma” of higher education.
Our
thematic practical field work activities were held in Taiwan. Taiwan is a
fractional country of the People's Republic of China, Taiwan has an area of 36.193
km2, the capital of Taiwan is the city of Taipei, the national
language of this country is Mandarin. One of the organizers of this thematic practical
field work activities is the National Chung Hsing University as the host and
the Taiwan government, the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau. Our KKN location
is in Chiayi county, Yuemei Village. When this program is held for 1 month from
1-31 July 2019, the time of our arrival in Taiwan is on 28 June 2019, so that
we are ready on the 1st, and have a time of adaptation in the village.
We
went to Taiwan using planes started from Sumbawa to Lombok and then to Jakarta,
before heading to Taiwan we made a transit in Malaysia. Arrived in Taiwan at
the International Airport of Taiwan located in the Taoyuan City, we were
welcomed by the LO to delivered us to the location of our KKN destination,
Yuemei village. Then travel to Chiayi district by car and arrived at one of the
place in Yuemei Village which becomes a place for us during our in Taiwan. When
we arrived in the village, we were welcomed by some of the community that is
very friendly like their own family, some of the community were able to speak
Indonesian and really helped us to communicate with the community.
On
July 1, 2019, 7 bicycles borrowed by some community for us, this bicycle will
accompany our trip as long as we are in the village. One of the villager named Ci
Atin, she is an Indonesian from Pontianak, Kalimantan, who lives in Taiwan, he
is one of the people who often helps us from our initial arrival in the
village, she also intercedes with community due to language limitations . When
we were chatting with her at the basecamp, suddenly, the police arrived and then conducted an interview, the
police who came were the special police who dealt with foreigners, because
there were already many foreigners visited the village, we were told to fill
out a form, apparently the form had Indonesian language column, that is because
there are so many foreigners from Indonesia in the village. The police who
arrived turned out to be very humorous and fluent in English, so the atmosphere
became tense and easily understood by us, they ask about the hijab worn by our
female friends.

After that all laughed because of
the police question.
After
the interview by the police, we were invited to take a walk by Ci Atin to the seed
factory, we went with bicycle because the distance from the base camp was not
too far away. There we learn seed nurseries with machines that use conveyor
belts, the method is quite easy to just put the net pot and seeds on the
machine and this net pot will be filled with soil and seeds automatically by
the machine, after the net pot filled seeds, then the net pot placed in the
greenhouse. Besides learning about seed nurseries in a modern way, we also take
pictures together.
Returning
from the seed factory we headed to the house of the headman, there we were
welcomed very warmly by the family of the headman. We are served coffee with
typical Taiwanese and dragon fruit from the headman’s garden. The headman has a
dragon fruit garden that is quite extensive, and often gives dragon fruit to us
for snacks at the basecamp. This dragon fruit from the headman inspired us to
make dragon fruit dodol as the newest product in Taiwan.
